Despite over 700 years of continued occupation, the Lamu Island has retained its timeless, rich historical Swahili heritage, that’s yet scarred by modernization. In Lamu residents use donkeys as the main mode of transport, but in the ocean dhows are used.
Lamu’s architecture is characterized by narrow streets, old storied buildings, and huge wooden doors carved with Arabic designs due to the firm Islamic heritage here.
Lamu Old Town is the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa. |
